Decades ago, people started visualizing the business processes in manufacturing. They called this value stream mapping.
What they did was visualize how the flow of information went through the company and next how the flow of materials went through the company. Recently business architects have discovered that value streams also work for them.

How to Design Architecture Principles—The word principle originally meant explaining how you know or believe something works (action-reaction, cause-effect). Today, too many enterprise architects don't know how to design architecture principles effectively. Their approaches define principles wrongly as general rules or guidelines. As long as you produce great-looking visualizations, like layered blueprints, that show understandable business solutions they need for their strategy, it is okay. BUT....the moment you introduce the word Enterprise Architecture or Architecture Principle, it all goes wrong.

Archimate is a meta-model that is used by some architects to model architecture. The Open Group names all of its products Open Group Standards, but also standards in short, and so Archimate is also called a standard by the Open Group, making many people think it is complete and can be used for everything, unedited. The problem with Archimate is that it misses many core entity classes, preventing it from doing things other than high-level business process-application landscaping, like business architecting. The reason for this and how we have extended the meta-model of Archimate to make it more useful is explained in this blog.

Business Capability Studies are done very frequently in organizations. Only their impact is often not as big as it could be or should be. Dragon1, as an open Enterprise Architecture method, promotes an approach to significantly increase the effectiveness of the results and outcomes of a capability study. One of the unique aspects of this is that Dragon1 differs between Capability, Ability, and Disability. This provides you with three new views of the business architecture. This enables you to analyze and decide more specifically on what to change in order to increase business capabilities.

Why are services considered products? A coffee machine is a product. It will not make a cup of coffee for you. You can ask your colleague (or hire someone) to do it for you. Your colleague provides the service for making you a cup of coffee. In this way, services make everyone’s life easier.
